Citta Vittoriosa, whose name literally translates to The Victorious City, is a historic fortified city found on the south side of Malta’s Grand Harbour. Locally known as Birgu, its history is rich with maritime, mercantile, and military activities. Birgu’s harbour, which once hosted the majestic galleys of the Knights of Malta and British Navy warships, today hosts some of Europes most spectacular private yachts.
The Maritime Museum housed in the old Royal Navy Bakery, proudly displays Malta’s extensive maritime history. The museum also has a large collection of over 20,000 items which includes ships, traditional Maltese boats, cargo items and uniforms.
You will also visit Fort Saint Angelo which is as majestic as the city it has proudly protected. Your guide will explain life within the Fort during the Great Siege, dubbed to be the bloodiest siege in history. During this time, the Fort, which offers breath-taking views of the Valletta Grand Harbour, served as the perfect spot from where the Knights could plan their defence and various assaults.
It was from here that the Knights saw the Ottoman empire strike Malta with a massive force which included 193 vessels with over 48,000 soldiers aboard, including 6,000 of the most feared Janissaries.
They were however held back and defeated by 6,100 courageous soldiers including 500 Knights in a battle which claimed thousands of lives and lasted 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days.
Following Fort Saint Angelo, you will also visit one of the world’s last remaining Inquisitors’ palaces. Located in the heart of Birgu the palace hosted the Inquisitor himself. His gruesome role was that of assessing any situations which was not in line with Christian values or beliefs. For example, adultery and theft would go punished severely through several torture procedures.
This is also the only such palace in the world to be open to the general public. You’ll will see the dominance of the Piano Nobile, the Holy Office Tribunal, a prison complex and a torture chamber.
This is a tour you will not forget.
